Schooled in Tamil? Government job easier

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government will reserve 20 per cent seats to candidates educated under Tamil medium for direct recruitment in the state’s services, an ordinance said on Tuesday.

In an extraordinary gazette, it said the decision was taken considering that Tamil-medium students got “very little chances” of jobs through the UPSC, in other state governments or in the private sector.

The government will soon bring in legislation on this, also given that a majority of schools and colleges in the state was using Tamil — one of the world’s most ancient languages — as the educational medium.

The ordinance recalled that the June World Classical Tamil Conference did pass a resolution on such a preferential appointment. The prime objective was conducting the state administration with “transparency in the vocal language of the masses” in “accordance with the provisions of the Constitution” and other laws of the land.
