Prosecution of Raja: Swamy to move SC

CHENNAI: Janata party president Subramanian Swamy on Friday said he would move the Supreme Court next week seeking directions to the Prime Minister to grant sanction to prosecute Telecom Minister A Raja for his alleged role in the 2G spectrum allocation scam, based on the recent observations in the Comptroller and Auditor General report.

Swamy’s earlier prayer seeking a similar direction to the Prime Minister from the Delhi HC was dismissed by the court on August 18.

Addressing a press conference here, Swamy said he had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on August 30 urging him to take decisive action on the prosecution of Raja. His request to grant sanction to prosecute Raja has been pending before the PMO for two years, he added.

On the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils, Swamy said he recently met Basil Rajapaksa, Sri Lankan minister for economic development and brother of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Swamy said Basil had assured that his country was ‘determined’ to bring constitutional amendments for granting autonomy to Tamil-speaking regions with ‘concurrent powers’. If Lanka fails to do that, countries like India, China and US should intervene, he added.

Swamy said he had written to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to order a CBI inquiry into the systematic fraud committed in the public distribution system in Tamil Nadu. “If CM does not agree, I shall file a PIL in the Madras HC,” he added.
