ANGUL: Waste spilling onto the road along the canal in the town continues to be an eyesore. The problem persists despite the fact that the municipality has been allotted five acres at Kusasinnga for dumping garbage. It has also availed of the sanctioned ` 11 lakh in March last. However, there has been no headway in the tender floated by the municipality for the boundary wall. If municipal executive officer Padmanav Naik is to be believed, contractors did not turn up to file tenders fearing opposition from locals. It was for the same reason that the municipality aborted its earlier plans to build a dump yard at Panchmahala on the outskirts of the town.Meanwhile, the scene near the canal is pathetic with wastes from 23 wards being dumped here. For the natives of nearby Amalapara, Hakimpara, Tamrit colony and Rajkisorepara, not a single day goes without cursing the civic body as they are forced to deal with bad odour and unhygienic conditions. They fear contamination of the canal water used by a section of the urban population. While the municipality spends lakhs of rupees cleaning the town, no efforts have been made to execute a proper sanitation system, they alleged.
