I can’t strain much: MK

CHENNAI: Giving a rare hint about his health, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Sunday said he could not make lengthy speeches and “strain” himself.

The remarks, made at the marriage of poet Vairamuthu’s son, contrast with what he said about himself barely six months ago. In March, at a book launch function, Karunanidhi said he was in good health.

On Sunday, presiding over the wedding of Kabilan and Ramya, the DMK veteran referred to a news report which suggested that the 86- year-old should not be made to sit through for long hours on the dais.

“Please allow the CM to take some rest,” he quoted the report.

Karunanidhi noted that Vairamuthu’s address was “lengthy”.

And quipped: “Out of affection and the right he has over you and me, Vairamuthu has given a lengthy speech — and some explanatory component is needed (for the marriage being held without Brahmins solemnising it).” He lauded Kabilan for his creativity, saying the young man would be adored for his skills.

Stressing the bond between Vairamuthu and him, Karunanidhi dropped a hint again on his health: “I should not speak for long and I cannot do that. May the young couple live long blissfully.”
