What to expect at the therapy

A  fast paced life and highly competitive environments have brought about attitudinal and belief changes. We all know changes can cause distress and shake the balance of harmony. During these times, consulting with a counsellor will help you to balance your mental and emotional health. Before you visit them, you must ensure that he/she is academically qualified and technically skilled to offer services.

When do you seek help?

You can take professional help when you are confused about making decisions, when you have difficulties in communicating with others, when you face relationship problems and even to deal with excessive worries. A trained professional will treat insomnia, uncontrollable fears, when you’re not able to cope with daily stressors, lack interest/motivation or have suicidal ideations.

Before the first contact

First you need to ask yourself if you will be comfortable telling intimate details of your life to a new person. Secondly, determine if you would be okay with the same gender or a person of the opposite sex. The number of sessions is determined by the nature of the issues. It is important to be consistent in attending sessions. Also ask these questions: how long are the sessions, and how often are they scheduled? Ask the potential therapist if he/she can explain the therapy. And also, what is the fee?

After the first session

Assess carefully your reaction to the first meeting. Was the professional open to the manner in which you presented your case? Did you get a sense that you could be comfortable? Did you feel a sense of connection and trust? Did you feel respected and heard? Did he/she behave in a professional manner? Did you feel relieved and comfortable?

Don’t forget that the psychotherapists are there only to assist, guide and navigate. They do not make decisions for you. They are trained to use several counselling techniques in assisting individuals, peers and families cope with anxieties and stress in life. They are there to help you heal, rehabilitate, recover, rebound and remain functional human beings.
