Power project from solid waste on the cards

Last Updated : 26 Jul 2010

If the talks between the Abu Dhabi-based NRI group and government succeeds, Kochi will get its first electricity project which generates power from solid waste.

Loro Group, an endeavour by NRIs in Abu Dhabi, is planning to start the plant in association with Irish company ‘The Wilson System’.

The custom-designed plant can consume over 1,60,000 metric tonnes of waste or more an annum and can generate 9 mega watt of electricity an hour out of which 1 mw will be consumed by the plant itself to work, an official with the firm said.

“Discussions with the State Government regarding the setting up of the plant and selling of the electricity generated from the plant are getting underway. The project can be set up only with the cooperation of the local body concerned. So, we have already taken up the issue with the local body concerned,” he said.

With a capacity to size-reduce waste by up to 80 percent its original volume a day, the plant can produce 192 mega watt of electricity.

“It can be set up inside a city with no carbon emissions. The byproduct  is eco-friendly biomass products and bio soil, which can be used for organic farming,” Loro Group managing director said.

Keeping in view the water scarcity among coastal and backwater regions of the state the group will also be concentrating on waste-water treatment and solar thermal desalination plants, he said.
