What’s up with the weather

KOCHI: Wondering why the rain is still pouring when it should be sunny and bright?

The rainy and cold weather we are experiencing now is due to a peculiar climatic condition, says C K Rajan, former director, Centre for Monsoon Studies, Cusat.

“The climate change is mainly due to two low pressure formations in a new pattern. They are moving without intensifying or dissipating,” he says.

Since both the formations are not that intense there will not be heavy rainfall. “The weather will remain cloudy with light rains.

The condition will remain the same at least for two more days and may continue even after that period,” he says. The pollution level will be high during this time. “So make sure to take preventive  measures to cope up with the climate change,” he says.

Fever cases on the rise

Fever cases, which were brought under control a month ago, have started to increase in the last few days.

Last monsoon dengue fever topped the list of diseases. According to the authorities with the health department, it was from certain pockets in Angamaly that most dengue and chikungunya cases were reported.

“We had adopted various measures to check the spread of diseases like dengue and chikungunya. So, such cases were not reported this year,” said Dr Sudhakaran, additional DMO, Ernakulam.

Apart from viral fever, water-borne diseases like typhoid and diarrhoea have been reported in various parts of the district.

Vector-borne diseases and air-borne diseases like pneumonia, flu and H1N1 are also on the rise.

“As we kept vigil, the number of A H1N1 cases could be brought under control,” Dr Sudhakaran said. “If the fever continues even after two days of taking medicine, we would prescribe medication for A H1N1,” he said.
