Art for a cause

Last Updated : 30 Jul 2010 11:23:12 AM IST

A large room tucked at the corner of the Jetprole House has canvases scattered all around. The light from the overhead chandeliers casts a halo on the paintings hung on the wall and displayed at every corner. The themes are many and so are the interpretations. The soothing blend of colours, powerful figures and intricate designs create a mesmeric effect on visitors.

In an effort to promote a just cause, Safion Art of Chennai, in association with Madhavi Aditya Rao is exhibiting a collection of the finest works of 40 artists from south India, titled Madras Wall, at the Jetprole House, Surabhi Gardens, Secunderabad. It is a mission to promote south Indian modern and contemporary art. To further the cause, the proceeds of the exhibition will be given in trust to a non-profit charitable organisation in Trichy, which is actively working for the cause of mental illness and provide support to the mentally challenged.

Raghunathan Pon’s paintings of native street art which possess a feel of life or the perfect synchronisation of long strokes and vibrant colours by Ilango AV are some of the highlights of the exhibition. The exhibition includes works of some veteran and contemporary artists. Artists like Alphonso Doss and SG Vasudev, who is from Karnataka, have also displayed their works. From the modernist painting of Mahalakshmi to the traditional style from the native villages of Tamil Nadu, or the works of abstract art that convey their message through the colours, brush strokes and form, this exhibition has a touch of everything.
