Tambaram, Then and Now

Last Updated : 25 Aug 2010

The students and teachers of SOS village in Tambaram provided snapshots of the area and its early history in celebration of Madras Day. Tambaram – Past and Present was a commendable effort considering that the exhibition was conceptualised by primary school children and teachers, who had to work with limited resources like cardboard, thermocol, grass and clay.

The areas in and around modern Tambaram, were well represented, especially the modern Madras exports processing zone and the buzzing railway station.

The director of the SOS Village, Nambi Varatharajan, revealed that the idea was born when he learnt that Pallavaram boasts of structures dating back to the Paleolithic age.

The exhibition was a testimonial to the fact that creativity needs no lavish resources, as children managed to recreate the greenery inside the famed Madras Christian College and Pachaimalai behind Madras exports processing zone with grass and clay.

The exhibition provided a bird’s eye view of Tambaram and the way it has changed over the years. The exhibition not only educated the visitors but also encouraged them to learn about the rich culture and heritage of their neighbourhood.
