CHENNAI: A rare twin surgery performed on a 27-year-old pregnant woman at the Chennai government general hospital has turned out to be successful, announced the hospital authorities on Thursday.

The patient, Easwari, underwent a caesarean while simultaneously being operated for dorsal spine hematoma. Doctors claimed that this was the first case of twin surgery of caesarean and spine reported in India and the third in the world.

The surgery, that lasted for more than two hours, was carried out on August 31 and now Easwari and her infant were reported to be healthy.

“Easwari suffered from low back pain and subsequently had numbness and weakness on both lower limbs.

She was admitted to the Sriperumbudur GH and was referred and admitted at the IMCU of Government General Hospital, as her neurological condition worsened,” said medical superintendent of the hospital C Veni. “Soon she developed dense paraplegia with no sensation or reflexes on her limbs. She also developed hesitancy of bladder. The MRI scan showed epidural hematoma following which the twin surgery was done,” said Dr Arun Kumar, who headed the rare surgical feat. He had performed another twin surgery - caesarean and tumor in the brain earlier this year.
