CHENNAI: Forget the sneakers and the tracks. You can lose weight as easily with workouts between the sheets.Sexual intercourse helps burn about 200 calories, equivalent to what is burnt in 30 minutes of brisk morning walk or 15 minutes of sweating it out on the treadmill.Dr D Narayana Reddy, sexual medicine consultant, says regular sex can reduce instances of serious diseases such as heart attacks, a phenomenon that medical professionals call sexual healing, and bring down mental stress and joint pain by producing endorphins. It also delays incidence of heart problems and lessens chances of prostrate and breast cancer, Reddy said that many people, including regular medical practitioners, are not aware of this. So with a view to sensitising the public and authorities on the need for trained sexual medicine practitioners, the Council for Sex Education and Parenthood would hold a national conference on Sexology at Hotel Savera from September 3 to 5, Reddy told a press conference on Wednesday. He said lack of trained sexologists – not a single medical institution/university has a course on sexual medicine – had led to proliferation of quacks. “Unofficial estimates are that quacks do business worth Rs 80 crore annually by selling legiyams and oil, which they claim can boost performance,” Reddy said.
